Karl is always on the go and wears different hats at work.

The IT role entails the administration and ownership of the Group’s IT systems and hardware, as well as the management of the cyber security and protection of the Groups data.

Project management covers the ongoing projects related to the new SG Main Offices in Malta as well as managing all the Groups facilities and the contractors required for the day-today operations and the premises upgrades and schedules of preventive maintenance.

Health & Safety Management is crucial for the Group as this role involves making sure that the Group is compliant with all Health & Safety legislations and international standard as well as overseeing the general wellbeing of staff.

Among Karl’s many contributions to the group, his crowning achievements include his dedication to the first consignment of Barcelo Rum in 2008, and more recently, the successful relocation of the Malta-based team to our ultra-modern South Block office. This move was accomplished with the invaluable assistance and vision of our architect and CEO.

In addition to his work, Karl is a loving husband and father of two sweet daughters. Karate has been his passion since 1998, and he recently earned his 5th Degree Black Belt in this art. In his free time, he also enjoys photography.

Let’s discover  Karl’s remarkable journey within the Group and explore his significant contributions:

1998 and 1999: Karl worked for two summers at Salvo Grima Duty Free Services Ltd – the Groups Duty Free Shop, whilst sitting for his Bachelor’s degree working 11-hour shifts as a part time delivery person.

2001: In July 2nd, Karl officially joined the Group as an Executive Assistant to General Manager based at Medina Offshore Services, Msida Circus, Msida.

2003: Moved to Pinto House and assisted the Commercial Manager as a Purchasing and Sales Executive within the Travel Retail & Distribution unit.

2006: Karl was promoted as Assistant of the Commercial Manager

2008: Received the first consignment of Barcelo Rum in May 23. October of this year, Karl decided to further his studies and travelled to Newcastle, UK to sit for a full time Masters of Science in Business with International Management.

2009: His Masters thesis was entitled “Identifying and maintaining competitive advantage through a tobacco manufacturing company’s relationship with its suppliers”. This was done with the assistance of British American Tobacco. In September 2009, Karl completed his Masters Degree and moved back to Malta.

2016: On 4th July, he rejoined the Group as an Information Systems Executive following 6 years working at a retail & distribution company as a Logistics Coordinator.

2019: In October, Karl was Promoted to I.T. and Projects Manager as well as Group Health & Safety Manager.

2020: 21st January was the first day on site at South Block with the CEO. With the assistance and vision of our architect the work began. 

2023: After an intensive 3 years and 8 months, the Malta-based staff finally moved into South Block. 

2024: In May 2024, the MASP presented an award to the architects of Salvo Grima and Karl Aquilina – Winner of Interior Architecture Award for Commercial or Public Buildings.

Karl’s journey and his achievements showcases his impeccable eye to detail and dedication, making all the projects assigned to him a success.
